On Valley Edition: Hunger; African American Student Graduation Rate

Segment 1: Hunger in the Valley
A new study of hunger in America ranks Bakersfield and Fresno number one and two in the nation in number of residents who struggle to put food on the table. How has the richest agricultural area in the nation become home to so many people who can't afford food? Ian Anderson with the Community Action Partnership of Kern County and Andy Souza, with Fresno's Community Food Bank join host Juanita Stevenson to talk about how to bring access to food to communities that struggle with poverty, in the middle of persistent economic challenges.

Segment 2: African American student graduation
Dropout rates for African American Youth are among the highest in nation, and the Valley is no different. Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Larry Powell and Fresno City College counselor Cedric Hardamon of the "Strengthening Young Men By Academic Achievement" (SYMBAA) program, talk about strategies to keep African American students in the classroom and on a pathway to success.

Segment 3: Clovis North African American Student Union
Angie Barfield, a parent from the Clovis North African American Student Union joins host Juanita Stevenson to talk about how their organization is helping students succeed and go on to college. The organization is holding a scholarship dinner on March 10th with noted speaker Brian White.

Juanita Stevenson has lived and worked in Fresno for the past 24 years. She is perhaps best known to Valley residents as a longtime reporter and news anchor with local television station ABC30, and has also worked at stations KJWL, KYNO and ValleyPBS. She is the recipient of the 2001 Associated Press Award for Best Reporting, and the 1997 Radio & Television News Directors Association Regional Edward R. Murrow award for Best Reporting.
