Expect Street Closures, Ongoing Construction For Tower District Beautification Project

A new beautification project in the Tower District will affect traffic on Olive Avenue through July. The Olive Avenue Streetscape will force street closures along the main Olive corridor.

Council members Esmeralda Soria and Miguel Arias who both represent the Tower neighborhood in District 1 and 3, spoke about the upcoming construction Monday. Arias acknowledged that it could compound the impact on local businesses.

“Given the nightlife of the Tower District, it’s been one of the hardest hit regions during the pandemic,” Arias said.

He stressed that although road closures will be in effect, sidewalks will stay open for pedestrian access to businesses.

Expect road closures on eastbound and westbound Olive Avenue between Yosemite and Roosevelt Avenues. The $1.3 million investment from the Streets Improvement Federal Grant Project includes landscaping and repaving, lighting upgrades, as well as reconstructing sidewalks to make them wider.

Once construction is done, outdoor summer events are also expected to return to the Tower District. Council member Esmeralda Soria says visitors should expect road closures for these events.

“It will be really transformative for the Tower District as we continue to reopen our local economy,” Soria said.

The construction project will last until July 22nd.
