The Fresno City Council could be poised to cut the rent on its minor league baseball stadium in half in an effort to attract a new buyer for the team.
The Fresno Grizzlies' current contract calls for them to pay 1-and-a-half million dollars a year....a deal that has them losing money every year.
Councilmember Lee Brand says a revised contract, that will come before the council this week, would simplify the lease and cut the rate half to tempt a new buyer.
"The city is sending a message that we willing to be flexible. That we understand the dynamics of the situation. That we understand the economics of the situation. That we are willing to roll up our sleeves and try to find a solution," Brand said.
Brand says the new contract would only apply to a new owner, the existing team owner's lease will not be changed.
According to Brand, some potential buyers have come forward but the current lease is driving them away.
There is also a concern that the Chukchansi Tribe will not be able to make its yearly 1-million dollar payment for naming rights on the stadium.
The team's season begins Thursday
