Community Hospitals, UCSF Announce New Pediatric Services

One of Fresno’s largest hospitals is expanding its partnership with a Bay Area health care giant, with the possibility of building a new facility in the future.

Community Medical Centers of Fresno and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland and San Francisco say the partnership will expand pediatric care at Community’s downtown Fresno campus, including plans for a new pediatric ICU and inpatient surgery services.

Community Regional Medical Center’s CEO Craig Wagoner says the partnership could lead to even more services in the future.

The move puts Community in direct competition for pediatric patients with Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. Relations between the two hospitals have become strained in recent years. Valley Children’s recently announced its own expanded partnership with Stanford, and the end of a decades old medical residency program with UCSF.

Community and UCSF have also been partners for years. The UCSF Fresno Medical Education and Research Program is based at CRMC’s downtown campus and their residents work in the hospital.
