As positive case numbers continue to climb, FUSD announced Thursday plans to reopen schools in the fall. However, parents will have the option to continue online learning for their children or send them back to a school campus.
Fresno Unified Superintendent Bob Nelson announced parents must fill out a survey choosing which learning environment is best suited for their children before July 31st.
“If you don’t think it’s safe, keep your kid out,” said Nelson. “If you think it's more important for them to have socialization, access to primary health care, access to nutrition and daily activity that are present with their teacher, engage in that process.”
Parents who do not fill out the survey before the deadline will have their children automatically enrolled in on-campus learning, Nelson said. The safety measures FUSD will take, such as mask usage and social distancing, will be posted on the district's website. Still, Nelson warns the risk of COVID-19 cannot be completely eliminated.
“Parents are going to have to assume some risk if they want their kids to go back to school,” he said.
The survey is available in English, Spanish and Hmong. But with rising case numbers, Nelson said a definitive start day for the Fall semester is still in the works.
