While smog in Los Angeles and wildfire smoke in San Francisco dominate headlines, California’s rural communities are also besieged by a constellation of forces that foul their air. In the San Joaquin Valley, one of the most polluted parts of the state, one in four children have asthma, and the impacts of air pollution cost the region $6 billion annually. A panel including Central Valley Air Quality Coalition executive director Catherine Garoupa White and USC sociologist and Solidarity Economics author Manuel Pastor visits Zócalo to discuss how to help all Californians breathe easier.
The Bakersfield Museum of Art announces the return of Art After Dark for its 2022 season, with the next event on January 27, featuring tours of the current exhibition On the Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s – 1990s from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection, cocktails by Tiki-Ko, a soundbath by multimedia artist Winslo, and a hands-on art project inspired by On the Edge.

Dr. Vartan Matiossian, a historian and literary scholar, has been Executive Director of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Church (New York) since 2019. He obtained his Ph.D. in History from the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia in 2006. He has published extensively in Armenian, Spanish, and English, including the translation of almost two dozen books and the editing of twenty-five volumes, as well as five books of his authorship in Armenian, one in Spanish, and two in English: Armenian Language Matters (New York, 2019) and The Politics of Naming the Armenian Genocide: Language, History, and “Medz Yeghern” (London, 2021). His next book in English, co-authored with Artsvi Bakhchinyan, is forthcoming from the Press at California State University, Fresno: An Armenian Woman of the World: The Life and Work of Armen Ohanian, the “Dancer of Shamakha.”
Eric Hahn is a stand-up comic and writer based out of Los Angeles. In 2009, Eric was fired from his long standing manager job at a restaurant chain when he first started performing comedy joking about said company on stage. The silver lining to being canned was a headlong dive into stand-up comedy, acting and writing. Eric is the founder and creator of 'LA’s Best,' a series of fun, tightly run comedy shows currently enjoying a run the first Wednesday of every month at WitZend in Venice, CA.
After starting her stand up career in New York where she spent many years performing in live Theatre Sketch and Improv troupes, Jennifer Murphy moved to Los Angeles 9 years ago and has since been seen on NBC’s Last Comic Standing Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen, on ABC with her own half hour special, and on TLC called This Is Why You’re Still Single.
