Most people associate dementia with memory loss. However, dementia is far more complex than most family caregivers understand. Dementia affects more than just memory, it impacts identity, communication, movement and relationships. Come for an opportunity to hear gerontologist and author of “A Loving Approach to Dementia Care”, Laura Wayman.
Music from classical to contemporary will be performed by New Horizons Band, Jazz & Orchestra of Fresno.

Meghan Velasquez, Executive Director of VCRC, will provide an understanding of common dementia-related behaviors, effective communication strategies, best practices when responding to troubling dementia-related behaviors, how to maintain a positive attitude and when to offer and receive support from others.
This workshop will include an overview of story structure, formatting a script, and learning various storytelling methods.
May 14 Thursday
Guests from the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission will speak to seniors ages 60 and older on how to use their smartphones, computers and tablets. These one-hour workshops will also provide an opportunity to learn how to identify spam calls, send text messages and make important calls using the cell phone.
Soundscapes of Merced Exhibit at Merced County Courthouse Museum - Ground Floor Gallery, Thursday, May 14, 5 - 7PM: Opening Program at 6:PM. Live performances by Tou Long Xiongxaychou, Jesse Gonzales, and Pat Dahlstrom. Curated by Patricia Vergara. This exhibit, in collaboration with UC Merced, presents a collection of stories, oral histories, music and environmental sound recordings, photos, and other artifacts that evoke the resonant sonic life of Merced County.
Aideed Medina’s work has appeared in various publications, and she is the author of 31 Hummingbird, Segmented Bodies, and a binational chapbook of selected poems from Segmented Bodies / Salmos de la Sierra Madre, with Aziz Córdova. She is the current Fresno Poet Laureate. The evening will also feature live dinner music with Los Fresnanitos, so bring your dinner, lawn chair or blanket.

These workshops are designed to help participants learn that falls and the fear of falling can be controllable. Participants will learn to set realistic goals for increasing activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk and promote exercise to increase strength and balance.
T-Ranch String Band joins the Bluegrass in the Park roster this year from their home base of Mariposa. The 4-piece band's repertoire favors "old-time," the style from which bluegrass evolved. The audience is encouraged to come early and pick a favorite spot under the park trees.
