CLOVIS, Calif. - The annual fireworks show held at Shaver Lake will take place Wednesday, July 2 this year. Usually, the event is held on the Fourth of July weekend.

Business owners who depend on the tourist boom that surrounds this summer event each year are hoping residents still visit Shaver Lake despite the weekday event.

“Normally, my reservations are booked for that day, and I’m sold out, and I have over 30 boats. And basically, I have two boats rented,” Sheldon Sandstrom told KVPR on Friday. He owns the marina at Shaver Lake.

The date change was made by the utility Southern California Edison, which manages the lake and handles the permits for this event. The shift aims to help ease traffic and support better fire response during one of the busiest weekends of the summer.

Sandstrom says this summer event has always drawn families to make a weekend getaway out of the trip. A Wednesday celebration – however – means visitors would have to take time off during the week, which could be a tough ask for some.

But Sandstrom says since the event’s date is different this year, there are a lot of unknowns.

“People have to take the day off, or they have to take the following day off,” Sandstrom said. “And that’s not going to work for most people.”

Despite the drop in marina reservations this year ahead of the Fourth of July, Sandstrom says he remains hopeful that people will make the trip, at least for the day.

Sandstrom encourages visitors to enjoy the lake and firework show that brings the community together. And he offers one reminder to those who do plan to attend: clean up before returning home.
