Young Artists Spotlight: Central High School Guitar Ensemble

This week on Young Artists Spotlight we feature the guitars of Central High School. This talented group of mostly 10th graders is led by instruction Brian Garcia. The students brought us their interpretations of classical and flamenco pieces. Garcia writes the following about his group, which is now in its third year:

The vision of the program is to build community support and educate the general public about the fine arts, particularly with guitar in this instance. Our students have the chance to train in 6 year cohorts beginning in the 7th grade and continuing through the 12 grade. The idea is to provide a curriculum and environment that helps each student reach their potential as a musician and performer. None of our kids take private lessons because they cannot afford the cost. Our program is designed to offset this disadvantage. Through performance, failure and success the students and parents begin to understand what it takes to develop musicians (discipline, work ethic, performance experience, grit and of course the love of music). It is my hope that over the years we can build capacity within the local community to continue supporting musicians, both professional and amateur for many years to come.

Support for Young Artists Spotlight comes from the Bonner Family Foundation; Dr. Alice Martinson and Carole Sturgis.
