Keyboard Concert Broadcasts Return To Valley Public Radio

Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series

Fresno's Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series returns to the airwaves of Valley Public Radio this fall with broadcast performances recorded during last year's season. Since 1972, the series has brought the world's finest pianists and organists to Fresno to perform for local audiences. This year FM89 listeners will hear the following performances Wednesday nights at 8:00 PM.

Wednesday September 3, 2014 - 8:00 PM: Leon Fleisher and Katherine Jacobson
Legendary pianist Leon Fleisher represents the highest standard of musicianship and continues to impart his life-affirming artistry throughout the world, thriving in a sustained career as conductor and soloist, recitalist, chamber music artist, and master class mentor. Fresno is privileged to be included in his 85th birthday concert tour together with his wife, internationally renowned pianist Katherine Jacobson. "Leon Fleisher's playing is wonderfully authoritative – live-enhancing on many levels" (The Guardian, London) and "communicates something essential about each composer" (The New York Times). 

Wednesday September 10, 2014 - 8:00 PM: Vadym Kholodenko
Gold medalist of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and winner of the 2010 Sendai International Music Competition in Japan, this twenty-six-year-old Ukrainian artist has already appeared in major venues in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Trained at the esteemed Moscow Conservatory, he has received accolades from critics for his “genuinely interesting” and “bold and elegant” playing (The Dallas Morning News). 

Wednesday September 17, 2014 - 8:00 PM: Shai Wosner
Born in Israel and a protégé of the great Emanuel Ax, Shai Wosner has attracted international recognition for his exceptional artistry, musical integrity, and creative insight. Winner of an Avery Fisher Career Development Award and a champion of works ranging from Beethoven and Mozart to Schönberg and Ligeti, he is praised for his “keen musical mind and deep musical soul” (NPR’s All Things Considered) and for exemplifying a “remarkable blend of the intellectual, physical, and even devilish sides of performance” (Chicago Sun Times). 

Wednesday September 24, 2014 - 8:00 PM: Jung-A Lee (organ)
Recipient of a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University, concert organist Jung-A Lee enjoys a thriving performing career in Europe, Asia, and the United States where she has appeared at such distinguished universities as Yale and Harvard and such notable churches as Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and First Congregational Church in Los Angeles. Jung-A Lee is currently active as an organist at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, an adjunct professor at Vanguard University, and an accompanist for the Men in Blaque Choir at University of California, Irvine. 

Wednesday October 1, 2014 - 8:00 PM: Jonathan Biss
“A serious, accomplished artist who puts the composer before the player” (The Los Angeles Times), American pianist Jonathan Biss is noted for his artistic maturity and versatility, prodigious technique, and diverse repertoire ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary composers such as György Kurtág and Leon Kirchner. In his fast rising career he has already collaborated with many of the world’s leading conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Herbert Blomstedt, Charles Dutoit, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Lorin Maazel, and Michael Tilson Thomas. 

Wednesday October 8, 2014 - 8:00 PM:  Sergei Babayan and Daniil Trifonov
One of today’s most consummate artists and a Fresno favorite, Armenian pianist Sergei Babayan returns to the series together with his protégé, Daniil Trifonov, Gold Medallist at the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition and winner of the 2011 Rubinstein International Piano Competition, for a performance of master works for two pianos. The combination of Sergei Babayan’s “phenomenal level of color and imagination” (The American Record Guide) and Daniil Trifonov’s “scintillating technique and virtuosic flair” (The New York Times) results in a most exhilarating experience. 

Wednesday October 15, 2014  - 8:00 PM: Steven Hough
With a singular artistic vision that transcends musical fashions and trends, this British artist is widely regarded as one of the most important and distinctive pianists of his generation. Recipient of a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2001, Stephen Hough has appeared with most of the major European and American orchestras and plays recitals regularly in the most prominent halls and concert series around the world. “A virtuoso who begins where others leave off” (The Washington Post), he demonstrates “the most perfect piano playing conceivable” (The Guardian, London).

Featuring music by Haydn, Prokofiev and Dvořák.

Wednesday October 29, 2014 - 8:00 PM: Tamila Salimdjanova
Gold Medalist at the 2012 BNDES International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro and recipient of the prestigious Russian Performing Arts Scholarship, twenty-one-year-old Tamila Salimdjanova joins the series for her American recital debut. Born in Uzbekistan and currently enrolled at the famed Moscow Conservatory, she has already appeared to great acclaim in concert halls in Russia, Germany, Italy, and France.
