DFI Marketing of Fresno has announced a recall of 28,000 cartons of cantaloupe after a sample tested positive for Salmonella bacteria. Dresick Farms Inc grows produce on a farm in Huron, in western Fresno County.
The cantaloupes were packed on August 26 and may have been distributed from August 27 to September 10, 2012 primarily to retail customers in the following states and one country: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Mexico.
The cantaloupes under recall all bear the DFI logo, and are packed in 6, 9, 12, 15, or 18 cantaloupes per carton. All cartons bear the “826 CALIFORNIA WESTSIDE" label.
Company officials say that due to their perishable nature, it's likely that much of the produce has already been consumed or is no longer on the market.
The California Department of Public Health issued the following statement, urging consumers to use caution:
CDPH is concerned that consumers may still have some of the recalled cantaloupes in their homes. Consumers in possession of these recalled cantaloupes should discard them or return them to the store of purchase for a refund. Anyone handling the recalled cantaloupes should promptly wash their hands with soap and warm water to ensure they do not become exposed to any Salmonella bacteria that may be present.
