For the fourth year the Fresno Arts Council is marrying art and agriculture into a show. The 2017 Arts Alive in Agriculture Showcase will be made up of local artists.
"Because we are in the heart of an agricultural community there are just so many more images that people can relate to and personally identify with," says Lilia Gonzales-Chavez, the group's executive director. She says this year the organization received a record number of submissions. They include paintings, photographs and some mixed media. Gonzalez-Chavez joined Valley Edition this week to tell us more about the juried competition and showcase.
"Many of the people in the Central San Joaquin Valley -- certainly in Fresno County -- have had agriculture be part of their daily lives, whether it be working in agriculture or just being aware of the impact it has on our overall economy," Gonzalez-Chavez says.
Each artist submitting work has to live in the Central Valley, be 18 years or older and must portray the human component of agriculture, technology and machinery of agriculture or agricultural landscapes. There will be cash prizes for the top artists. A reception and exhibit will be held Thursday April 6, 2017 at Fresno City Hall.
