Valley Public Radio Announces Alice Daniel As News Director

Valley Public Radio News Director Alice Daniel

Valley Public Radio has announced the hire of Alice Daniel as the station’s news director. A longtime correspondent for KQED’s The California Report, Daniel will supervise the station’s growing local news department.

Valley Public Radio’s interim President Joe Moore said Daniel is the right fit to lead the station’s journalism efforts. “Alice is a talented reporter and educator, who always finds a way to bring out something special or unexpected in her stories,” said Moore. “Six years ago we didn’t have any local reporters at the station. Now we have three, and our work is increasingly being recognized with awards at the regional and national level. Alice has the skills and the insights to bring our local journalism to the next level.”

Daniel has a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and more than 25 years of experience as a print and radio journalist.

“I am excited by the prospect of working with other reporters to cover this diverse and story-rich region in a way that makes a difference for the community at large,” she said.

As a correspondent for The California Report, Daniel covered the Central Valley from Stockton to Bakersfield and beyond.

“I love the creative process of figuring out the best way to tell a compelling story,” Daniel said. ”And there is nothing I love more in journalism than finding that gem of a story that no one else has unearthed.”

In addition to her broadcast and newspaper work, Daniel has been a lecturer in the Department of Media, Communications and Journalism at Fresno State for 17 years.

She is the recipient of two Fulbright awards and lived in Accra, Ghana last year with her family. As a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Ghana, she assisted students with producing a live radio news show. She also started an oral history project on journalists who worked during Ghana’s transition from a dictatorship to a democratic republic. A Fulbright Regional Travel Award allowed her to teach journalism seminars at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.

Daniel is married to Ben Boone, a composer, jazz saxophonist and professor at Fresno State. They have two teenage sons who attend Edison High School.

“Journalism and travel have taught me one good rule,” she said. “And that is to leave my preconceived notions at the door.“
