A new national survey indicates three Central Valley communities are among the worst in the nation when it comes to resident’s perception of safety.

A Gallup pollrecently released shows that Fresno residents say they are the least likely to feel safe and secure in their neighborhoods. The Stockton-Lodi region and Bakersfield ranked second and third.

In all three areas, less than 64% of adults say they always feel safe and secure - making them the least likely to feel safe among the 100 most populated U.S. metropolitan areas.

The results are based on data collected throughout 2014 as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. They asked residents to rate on a 5-point scale whether they felt safe in their communities. A 5 rating  means people strongly agreed that they always feel safe and secure, and a 1 rating indicates they strongly disagreed with the statement.

Residents in Des Moines, Iowa, and in Raleigh, North Carolina, were at the top of the list were people felt the safest.
