This past weekend thousands of people made the trek to Yosemite Valley from around the world to marvel at the majesty of Yosemite Falls, El Capitan and Half Dome.
But just miles north, Yosemite’s little sister, Hetch Hetchy valley sits submerged, a tribute to the 20th century’s quest for man to dominate and even destroy nature in the name of progress. A new book by author Kenneth Brower – “Hetch Hetcy: Undoing A Great American Mistake” (Heyday - 2013) tells the story of how the City of San Francisco destroyed this wonder of Yosemite National Park.
Brower joined us on Valley Edition to talk about the push to build the dam in the years after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and ideas about how to restore the canyon that John Muir and others considered a rival to Yosemite Valley.
