The Fresno Chapter of the League of Women Voters will celebrate its 75th anniversary next Monday with a special event featuring Fresno’s first woman mayor, Karen Humphrey. From 1989-1993 Humphrey led the city during both a time of rapid growth and a big change in governance.

It was then that voters approved a dramatic change to the city’s charter, creating the “strong mayor” form of government, with a CEO-style mayor, replacing the former city council/city manager style of government. Since then Humphrey has been active in government affairs in Sacramento, and in advancing the cause of women in elected office.  She joined us on Valley Edition to reflect on her term in office in Fresno, her career as a broadcast journalist and what can be done to bring more women into public office.
