When you think of California’s major technology centers, you probably think of Silicon Valley, or maybe even San Diego, but Fresno probably isn’t at the top of your list.

Now there’s a group of local technologists who hope that soon that might change. Their vision for transforming the region with higher paying jobs is attracting national attention – including from James Fallows national correspondent for The Atlantic. James and his wife Deborah started writing about Fresno last year as part of a piece on high speed rail for his American Futures project.

Now they’re back in the valley writing about tech startups, innovative elementary schools and career technical education. Fallows joined us on Valley Edition to talk about his observations as a journalist for a national publication covering Fresno, and what the rest of America can learn from mid-sized inland cities like those featured in American Futures.

Ezra David Romero is an award-winning radio reporter and producer. His stories have run on Morning Edition, Morning Edition Saturday, Morning Edition Sunday, All Things Considered, Here & Now, The Salt, Latino USA, KQED, KALW, Harvest Public Radio, etc.
