The Other California is a new podcast launching soon featuring placed-based storytelling focused on the small towns of California’s agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. The Other California will tell the stories of people who live in a part of California that most people think of as “flyover” or “drive-through” country. To an outsider passing through on the freeway, these towns may seem like unremarkable outposts amid vast factory farms, places only to stop for gas or a restroom break. Yet as our project will reveal, they are actually filled with incredible human stories about culture, community, and the changing nature of the Golden State. In reality, they are just as fascinating and just as essential to our understanding of the state as stories found in the Bay Area or Southern California.
