Young Artists Spotlight

Thursday at 8:00 PM beginning in March

This unique program presents performances by talented young student musicians and performers from our six county broadcast area. Valley Public Radio's David Aus hosts the program, which returns in 2021 on Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m.beginning March 18, 2021.

This week on Valley Public Radio's Young Artists Spotlight, we feature a performance from the University High School String Quartet. The group features students Anjeli Macaranas, violin; Hope Yuan, violin; Abby Van de Water, viola; Hasina Torres, cello and is led by Randall Cornelison. Today on Young Artist's Spotlight we feature performances by two sisters from Bakersfield, Kesley and Anna Jian, both students of Bakersfield piano instructor Bonnie Bogle Farrer. Hear them play music by Bach, Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

On this week's Young Artist's Spotlight we feature string players from the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra. 

For three decades the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra has brought together music students in the south valley to perform high-caliber professional-level symphonic music. BYSO is an affiliated group of the Bakersfield Symphony, operating under its board of directors with able assistance from manager Brent Williams, parents, Symphony coaches, and private teachers. Funding is provided by corporate and private contributions, player tuition, and ticket sales.

Today on Young Artist's Spotlight we feature a performance from four of the five members of the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet. All four are new to the group this year. The group has played pre-concert music for the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and for the Community Concert Association concert which featured the Presidio Brass. The group's founder and coach is Steve O'Connor, trumpeter, who serves on the BYSO board and plays in many local organizations, including the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, the Bakersfield Municipal Band and the Bakersfield Winds.

This week on Young Artists Spotlight we feature five violin soloists who are who are studying with instructor Limor Toren-Immerman. All are also members of Youth Orchestras of Fresno (YOOF) and they represent all three of YOOF's orchestras, the Youth Chamber Orchestra (YCO), the Youth Symphony Orchestra (YSO) and the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO).

This week on Young Artists Spotlight we feature more music for guitar ensemble, this time with the Lindsay Guitars of Lindsay High School from Tulare County. These talented students have been repeat guests on Young Artists Spotlight, and this year, they performing everything from Hollywood film themes to guitar classics. 

Today on Young Artists Spotlight, we hear talented young string players from the orchestra. First, Benjamin Pegram and Joshua Hahm perform two movements each from J.S. Bach's Partita No. 2 for solo violin. Those performances are followed by a string quintet, which performs Franz Schbuert's String Quintet in C major.
