A proposed new ballot measure would tax bottled water sales in California

A proposed new ballot measure in California would tax bottled water sales. If backers gather enough signatures to put the initiative on the ballot, voters would be asked to place a tax of 5 cents per ounce on bottled water sold in the state. The measure would also require bottled water to contain a label identifying the product as “not drought friendly.”

The measure would need over 360,000 signatures from registered voters to qualify for the November 2016 election. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla has set a December 21, 2015 deadline for collecting the signatures required to put it on the ballot.

It's not the first ballot measure proposed by San Diegan Louis J. Marinelli. He also is circulating a measure that would change the office of Governor of California to President of California, and another that would have California eventually become its own nation state.
