A new study says students at California’s Community Colleges are achieving many of their academic goals. But Community College officials say they’ll be recovering from the drastic cuts during the Great Recession for years to come. Capital Public Radio’s Max Pringle reports.
Paul Feist with the California Community Colleges says there’s a lot to like in the findings of the “Student Success Scorecard.”
Feist: “There have been slight gains in the rate of students completing remedial math, English and English as a second language. There have also been gains in terms of the number of students persisting past the first year of their education.”
But, Feist says California’s Community Colleges had to cut more than 20 percent of their courses after the Great Recession started in 2008. He says the number of certificates and degrees and the number of transfers to four-year institutions have dropped 2.6 percent since then.
The California Community College system is the largest higher education system in America, serving more than two million students per year.
