The FBI says that the student who carried out a knife attack on the UC Merced campus in November was, in fact, a ‘self-radicalized’ Muslim.
According to the FBI, 18-year old Faisal Mohammad had visited websites associated with the self-described Islamic State and viewed other extremist propaganda in the weeks leading up to the attack.
Based on that and the contents of his bag, which included a handwritten attack plan and a photocopy of an ISIS flag, the FBI believes he drew inspiration from the terror group.
The FBI says there is no evidence that Mohammad had any actual contact with ISIS.
However, in a statement officials say they may never know exactly why he chose to attack his fellow students.
Mohammad injured four when he burst into a UC Merced classroom with a knife.
He was later shot and killed by campus police.
