California Lawmakers Propose Turning State's Bankrupt Utility Into A Publicly-Owned Cooperative

Lawmakers in California are calling on the state’s public utility commission to remake Pacific Gas & Electric into a cooperative owned by its customers.

PG&E is currently in bankruptcy, and a group of local leaders across northern and central California says that gives state regulators an opportunity to change the company into something they say would be better able to respond to wildfires and deal with long-term threats like climate change.
