Children’s books about topics like race, gender identity and sexual orientation are increasingly at risk of being banned by schools and libraries across the country. But Dr. Selena Van Horn, Fresno State assistant professor of education, believes these books play a vital role in helping young people of all backgrounds succeed in the classroom. She spoke with Valley Edition host Kathleen Schock about children’s books and the surprising positive effects the pandemic may have had on early childhood literacy.

Kathleen Schock is the host of Valley Edition. In the show, Kathleen and the Valley Public Radio news team explore issues that matter to the residents of Central California through engaging conversations and in-depth reporting.
