News Digest 4/12/18 - Yosemite Fee Hike, Delano Murder, Tulare Supes

Parks Fee Hike
The National Park Service has backed off its plan to raise entrance fees at popular parks like Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon to $70. Under a revised plan announced Thursday, the new entrance fee would be $35.00 starting June 1.  The park service says the majority of the increased revenue will stay in the parks to help on a backlog of maintenance. Overall, across all parks, entrance fees rise $5 under the new plan.

Tulare County District Maps Draw Scrutiny
The Dolores Huerta Foundation is threatening to sue the Tulare County Board of Supervisors over district maps that they say deprive Latino voters of appropriate representation. The move - which was first reported by KGET - follows similar efforts that have caused Kern County Supervisors and the Kern High School District to re-draw district lines. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 64 percent of Tulare County residents are Latino, but Latinos don’t occupy any of the county’s five supervisorial seats. A representative of the Dolores Huerta Foundation has confirmed to Valley Public Radio that the organization has given the county until May 5th to respond to its threat of a lawsuit.

Valley Grape Grower Murdered
A prominent valley grape grower is dead after a shooting near Delano. 85-year-old Jakov Dulcich was found at the site of a traffic collision by Delano Police Wednesday. Authorities with the Kern County Sheriff's Office say a suspect described as a Hispanic male in his 20s fired into Dulcich’s SUV. The suspect was also involved in a physical altercation with the driver of a second vehicle. He fired another shot, but there were no injuries. The second victim fled into a nearby vineyard, and Dulcich was later pronounced dead.

Charges Filed In Fire Death
The Kern County District Attorney’s Office is filing charges against a residential management company in connection with a fire that killed a five month old in Oildale in 2016. The charges of felony involuntary manslaughter involve the allegation that Pama Management failed to maintain the mobile home as required by law. The adult occupants of the trailer were able to escape, but the infant died as a result of the fire.
