The City of Fresno has adopted a new parks master plan. On Thursday, the city council unanimously approved the document, which took over a year to develop. It’s the first time in decades the city has come up with a comprehensive plan for its parks infrastructure. The city says it needs 1,100 acres of new green space in the city, much of it south of Shaw Avenue.
However, while adding new parks is a goal, it might be difficult. The report also says the city has $110 million in deferred maintenance on its existing parks facilities, and should spend spend an extra $5 million a year on upkeep. Fresno routinely ranks at the bottom of a nationwide list of parks per capita, and south Fresno enjoys far fewer park amenities than the northern half of the city.
