Vince DiCiccio
One of FM89’s most recognizable and popular on-air voices, Vince DiCiccio is regarded among those at the station to be as fun to know as he is to listen to. He’s been a member of the Valley Public Radio team for just over a decade, and in that time has left his memorable stamp with his current programs, The Oasis and The Intersection. Vince was kind enough to take the time to answer a number of questions for this profile.
Vince was born to 2nd Generation Italian/Sicilian parents in South Philadelphia. From his professional jazz bassist father, he was given a love of sports and music, especially jazz, at an early age - two passions that have endured. “By the age of fifteen, after several years of piano lessons, I was working a few gigs and attending numerous jam sessions. Interestingly, several of these young players would eventually become well-known figures in jazz,” Vince says.
California beckoned in 1970 where he began college only to be interrupted by a couple years in Europe living and working in Munich. Returning to the States, San Francisco became home. Vince completed his degree in Social Work and worked in the field until landing a job managing a store in Noe Valley – Streetlight Records - all the while playing piano a couple nights a week.
Vince came to Fresno in 1996, and began his association with FM89 in 1999, as a volunteer with the program Jazz at Home which showcased the local scene. “I remain very grateful to Jim Meyers for taking a chance on me. Around the holidays in 2002, I was offered the staff position as announcer & host of The Oasis (then known as FM89 Showcase) on Sunday nights. The unique jazz/classical 2-hour hybrid show The Intersection began in early 2006.
Outside of his station activities, Vince spent 10 years as a High School & Junior College baseball umpire and over a year as a sportswriter & editor for an independent sports paper. Vince has been the piano player at Yoshino’s Japanese Restaurant since 2000.
