The Fresno County University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) is accepting applications for its 2011 UC Master Gardener class through 5pm on October 1. Every two years, in depth, research-based horticultural training is provided by UCCE farm advisors and specialists to selected participants who wish to become volunteer UC Master Gardeners. UC Master Gardener trainees learn about plant science, soils, irrigation, landscape design, turf, wildlife and pest management, diagnosing plant problems and other horticultural topics. Hands-on classes are also a part of the training program. The training places an emphasis on environmentally sensitive gardening techniques, such as reduced use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and usage of integrated pest management, soil building measures and irrigation runoff prevention. In exchange for the training, the new UC Master Gardeners commit volunteer time to extending the information to home gardeners. The Fresno County Library is seeking out student film projects. Teens ages 13-22 are invited to submit their original films to compete for $2,500 in prizes. Categories include: documentary, commercial or public service announcement, feature short, music video, and animation. There is no entry fee and judging will be conducted by local experts in the film and technology industries. Intent to Submit due September 17; Film Entries due October 4. A free public screening of all accepted films will be held at the Woodward Park Regional Library on November 4 at 6:30pm. Winning films will be recognized at the awards ceremony at the Tower Theater on November 14 at 3pm. For more information, visit a local branch library or:

An all new Safari Night will be held at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo on September 3 from 6pm-midnight. It's back, but it's not the same wild night from the past. This wildly wonderful adults-only benefit features specialties from premier restaurant and beverage sponsors, dancing under the stars and enjoying the Zoo at twilight, along with Zooper Live and Silent Auctions. General admission tickets are $50 each for Fresno Chaffee Zoo members, $60 for non-members, and VIP tables of 10 for $500. For more information, call (559)498-5921.

Canstruction, a design-build competition fighting hunger is coming to the San Joaquin Valley on October 16. Teams of students and local businesses will join 166 participating cities around the nation building 10’ by 10’ sculptures of hot dogs, bridges, Elvis posters, and more. Guided by local design-build mentors, the sculptures made of cans are to be showcased at the Riverpark Shopping Center in Fresno in October. All food will be donated to the Community Food Bank to fight hunger in the central valley. Organizers are asking for 18 teams of five people to participate in the event. The Buck Rock Foundation is hosting a Labor Day Weekend Celebration and Open House at Buck Rock Lookout in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, Sequoia National Forest. The event will take place on Sunday, September 5 from 10am-3pm and will be held at the base of the lookout. Local Wuksatchee /Wutchumna elder Eddie Tupishna Sartuche will kick-off the event with a traditional Native American “Blessing of the Rock”. Booths featuring local history and wildlife, children’s activities, and lookout memorabilia will be on display and a variety of local vendors will be onsite selling their crafts. Smokey Bear is scheduled to appear throughout the day while fire watchers will be on hand to explain the workings of this active and historic fire lookout.
